Sunday Morning Meditation

“Hope is the thing that is left to us in a bad time. I shall get up Sunday morning and wind the clock as a contribution to order and steadfastness.” -EB White

I love this quote. All the components that make up a life –

Both good and bad; hope and despair. Because life is never all of one thing. Whenever we feel stuck on one side of the ampersand (&), there is always a remnant, there is always something left, on the other side.

Recurrence, repetition, the grind. What is there to do except get up each day to a new morning? Sometimes – oftentimes – this feels like work; like a winding of the clock. And yet it’s also…

Service, gift-giving. I craft my life and give it as a contribution to something; to someone. To myself, To my friends and family. To a community. To God. To the universe. To love. To future generations.

Why? What purpose does this all serve? Order and steadfastness? The least flashy words I can think of to fuel the process. But isn’t this what we need – 1. order: relation to one another in 2. steadfastness: unwavering duty – to keep doing what we do?

Today is a day to keep doing it. Happy Sunday morning!
