When I started drinking coffee I remember he told me I should learn to enjoy drinking black coffee and espresso before I started getting fancy with lattes, creamers, and shots of vanilla. The same was true for alcohol. Until I could enjoy a glass of pure, unadulterated whiskey, he told me, I had no business opening the mixed drink menu. Not only is it prudent to learn and enjoy what it is you’re actually drinking, he thought this approach built character and discipline.
His advice has stuck with me through the years. Learn to enjoy the straight stuff first. Start with the basic and, as you desire and find necessary, add on from there.
