Should Have

I am a list-maker. I know there are many of us out there.

Today, I am working on this list –

10 things I know to be true.

10 things I should have learned by now.

“Should have” is a dangerous mentality to stay in for too long. However, I know I have a tendency to lean in when life gets overwhelming or difficult or busy and I think there are times when it’s appropriate and necessary to step back and reflect.

For every one thing you (painfully and/or regretfully) should have learned by now, there is a lesson on the other list that you’ve already lived and experienced as true. We need to remain in the tension of both lists. You have learned and you have so much still to learn. You have lived well and you are still becoming who you are. Wisdom and humility. Truth and failure. We need both. Life is never all of one thing.
