The best (and probably easiest) way for you to explore my taste and love of all things film is to spend ten minutes exploring wonder.is.
However, if you’re more of the instant gratification type, here are a few of my movie lists. For the sake of brevity, I only included a film on one list (even if it could fit into several categories) and it’s all randomly ordered.
The DVDs I actually own (that’s saying something, right?):
Good Will Hunting | Moulin Rouge | Horton Hears a Who | Away We Go | Lars and the Real Girl | Despicable Me | The Shawshank Redemption | The Concert | Inception | Memento | Revolutionary Road | Donnie Darko | Amelie | Atonement
Quintessential “Sam”:
The Reader | Garden State | Dead Poet’s Society | The Wrestler | An Education | Stranger Than Fiction | A Serious Man | Fight Club | The Diving Bell and the Butterfly | Beasts of the Southern Wild | Moonrise Kingdom
The Best of Netflix Instant Stream:
Winter’s Bone | Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind | The Fighter | Rabbit Hole | Melancholia | Mad Men | Breaking Bad | Shutter Island | The Constant Gardner | Brokeback Mountain | Biutiful | Billy Elliot | Sin Nombre
Meryl Streep:
The Hours | Doubt | Kramer vs. Kramer | The Iron Lady | Sophie’s Choice | Julie and Julia
Notable Documentaries (many are instant stream as well):
Objectified | The Garden | Helvetica | Bill Cunningham: New York | Bonhoeffer | Man On Wire | Undefeated | For The Bible Tells Me So | Waiting for Superman | Food, Inc.
Other films I think have something significant to say:
Magnolia | Another Earth | Tree of Life | LOTR | Precious | District 9 | Up | Requiem For A Dream | There Will Be Blood | Crash | Rachel Getting Married | Hugo | Little Miss Sunshine | The Artist | 127 Hours
This is an epic movie list…
thanks for sharing this, Sam. I’m looking through your documentary list, and I remember I was disturbed by watching “For The Bible Tells Me So” at first, and I felt something (perhaps the Holy Spirit moving as a sense of unease) stirring inside of me, but I dismissed it. Here, months later and standing on the less conservative side of the issue, I don’t have the words to describe what happened. but something is different
Hey Ryan! That is definitely a powerful and convicting film! You should check out the website of the Fuller student group I’m involved in called OneTable – http://onetablefuller.wordpress.com/
